Israeli attacks on south, east Lebanon result in two deaths
“The Israeli enemy strike on a car in Naqoura in Tyre province led to the death of one person,” the ministry stated. A second attack on a vehicle in Nabi Sheet in the Baalbek region claimed another life. Additionally, one person was injured in the southern town of Aitaroun after war remnants exploded, according to health officials.
Although a ceasefire has been in place for nearly a year, Israel has continued to carry out airstrikes, often asserting that its targets are Hizbollah positions. The Israeli military had not immediately commented on Sunday’s attacks.
In recent weeks, the frequency and intensity of Israeli strikes in Lebanon have risen. The health ministry reported that two people were killed and another injured in strikes on southern Lebanon on Saturday, with Israel claiming the deaths were of Hizbollah fighters. Earlier in the week, similar attacks on Thursday and Friday resulted in four and two deaths, respectively, including civilian casualties such as an elderly woman.
A United Nations special rapporteur warned last week that Israel’s targeting of vehicles, some apparently civilian, could constitute war crimes, despite Israel maintaining that its operations were directed at Hizbollah operatives.
The ceasefire agreement from the previous year stipulated that Israeli forces would withdraw from southern Lebanon, while Hizbollah would pull back north of the Litani River and dismantle military infrastructure in the south. However, Israel continues to maintain troops at five border points it considers strategic. Under US pressure and in response to fears of escalating attacks, the Lebanese government has moved to initiate the disarmament of Hizbollah, a plan opposed by the group and its allies.
