UNIFIL patrol gets targeted by Israeli drone in southern Lebanon
The mission stated that the assault “are in violation of Security Council Resolution 1701 and Lebanon’s sovereignty, and show disregard for safety and security of the peacekeepers implementing Security Council-mandated tasks in southern Lebanon.” No injuries or property damage were recorded during the incident, according to the statement.
UNIFIL also reported that an Israeli drone flew over the same patrol in the region, forcing peacekeepers to take defensive actions to neutralize the threat.
The mission has been active in southern Lebanon since 1978 and saw its mandate strengthened under UN Security Council Resolution 1701 following the 2006 conflict between Israel and the Lebanese group Hezbollah.
Reports note that Israel has frequently carried out airstrikes in Lebanon, citing efforts to target Hezbollah infrastructure, despite a ceasefire agreement implemented in November 2024. As part of the truce, the Israeli military was expected to fully withdraw from southern Lebanon by January 2025. However, forces have only partially pulled back and continue to operate from five border outposts.
